Day Trips from San Diego

Activities Destinations Family San Diego USA & Canada

Do you want to head out of San Diego for a few days and explore more of the southern part of California?  If you’re staying for a couple of weeks there are plenty of great things that are within easy reach where you can have some great family fun whilst exploring.

Even better, you don’t need a car to get everywhere – some fab trips can be enjoyed by rail and boat.  Your transportation there and back can become part of the whole excursion!

Some top day trips from San Diego include:

San Juan Capistrano

The main attraction in this quaint and charming town is an old Mission.  It is an interesting place to take a tour of, and when you have finished you can enjoy a stroll around the small and welcoming shops and restaurants.  A nice way to get here is by train.  Your kids can pass the journey seeing what they can spot out of the window … or they could also fill in some of the activities in their Kids’ Travel Guide – San Diego!

Disneyland

An enormous hit with most kids, Disneyland is just an hour and a half or so by road outside of San Diego.  There’s a brilliant selection of rides for people of all ages and old and young alike will enjoy seeing all their favourite characters and posing for pictures with them.  There are souvenir shops and plenty of places to stop for a drink and a bite to eat – allow a full day to enjoy Disneyland and all is delights.

Legoland

Designed especially for kid’s fun, there are also rides and attractions to keep the adults happy too.  As the name indicates, it is a theme park dedicated entirely to Lego!  Everyone can be amazed at the large features that are made entirely from the small plastic blocks.

Los Angeles

Depending on how patient your kids are when travelling from place to place, and how much your family really wants to hit the highlights of LA, it is possible to do it in a day trip from San Diego.  It will be a long day though – and a long drive!  It takes about two and a half hours each way to get there and back.  Whilst at least one nigh is recommended you could enjoy a fun LA excursion, visiting places like the Avenue of Stars, Hollywood, Santa Monica Boulevard, Universal Studios, and all the other places that help to make LA such an iconic destination.

Borrego Springs

A lovely, calm, and relaxing spot, enjoy the peaceful nature and natural beauty at the desert community of Borrego Springs.  The way of life is certainly different to that in on-the-go San Diego!  Kids can enjoy spotting the large sculptures of prehistoric creatures that are scattered around the area.

Tijuana

If you want to experience something different entirely you could even take a day trip into a different country!  Mexico’s Tijuana is just a short hop over the border and your kids can delight in seeing the famous and iconic Tijuana zebras.  (They are really painted donkeys!)

Wine areas, such as the stunning Temecula Valley, historic gold rush towns, such as Julian, and even more pretty beaches, like those at Laguna Beach, are also great places to head to for a day trip.
