How to get around in Rome from the airport:
There are two airports in Rome, Fiumicino (which is the biggest in Italy and the 6th in Europe concerning the traffic) and Ciampino (which opened in 1916 and is currently used specifically for budget flights). They are both located around 30 minutes’ drive outside the city.
For getting to Rome, we recommend you to choose from the several companies operating regular bus transfers, with prices between €4-6 for one way. In the airports, just follow the marks and they will lead you easily to the bus stations. You can also take a train from Fiumicino to Termini called Leonardo Express. It travels every 30 minutes, 1st class service at €14, but it tends to be crowded.
Termini Station
The Termini Station is the largest public transportation connection point – trains, trams, buses, and the subway go through this station. Buses from the airport and Leonardo Express have their end stop here.
Get to know Rome underground
The Rome underground transport network has been opened since 1955 and is a rapid and easy way of going from one attraction to the other. There are two lines, the A (red) and B (blue), which meet at the same intersection in the Termini Station.

Buses and trams
Although buses and trams are also available and can offer you nice sightseeing opportunities, they are slower and more crowded, so not always recommended for a trip with kids. There are two main sites where you can buy such a card, http://www.romeandvaticanpass.com and http://www.romapass.it, and they offer you access to public transportation and main view-points of the city. Traffic-free places:
Due to the large number of tourists that visit the city throughout the year, as well as the government’s desire to protect historical places, car traffic is restricted in some of Rome’s areas.
